The “Mourning” After
The question this “mourning”, the day after the national presidential election is not: “Who won?” or “How did you vote?” Christians need to consider how we should individually and corporately respond when the people have voted and God has clearly spoken!
When President Bill Clinton was elected to his first term in 1992, many Christians manifested a spirit the days after that was at best demoralized, if not full-blown depression. One would have thought God had abdicated the throne of heaven and the man with the slyly grin from Arkansas had succeeded Him!
If you are struggling with the right response the “mourning” after; allow me to exhort you to respond to the question of the election’s outcome with confidence that Almighty God is Sovereign and the affairs [and elections] of man are not beyond His reach and control.
God ordains kings, rulers and all that are in authority. Every leader is an extension of God’s rule and reign and we are bound to obey and pray for all who are in authority.
Romans 13:1 – “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”
Romans 13:5 – “Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.”
1 Timothy 2:1-2 – “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
There are few in authority who consciously seek the will and way of God, but we can be certain that a Sovereign, Omnipotent and Omniscient God uses the designs and ways of rulers to bring to pass His will and purpose.
The prophet Daniel was a model of faith in God’s sovereignty:
Daniel 2:20-21 – “Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are His: 21 And He changeth the times and the seasons: He removeth kings, and setteth up kings: He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:”
Christian, this is the “Morning”, not the “mourning” after elections. Turn off the talk radio shows and mute the TV news talking heads and turn your heart and focus to the Lord! Read your Bible and pray! Don’t allow the lost to see you bearing a spirit of gloom and despair when your attitude and outlook should reflect your confidence in the Lord Who is Sovereign!
Proverbs 8:13-17 – “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. 14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength. 15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. 16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth. 17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.”
Stop the mourning and Seek the Lord!
