proverbUnbelievably, we are beginning our third month toward our goal of reading a chapter in Proverbs each day this year.  I pray my labor to write these daily devotionals is a blessing and encouragement for you to study God’s Word.  To be “approved by God”,  Paul exhorted Timothy to study God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:15).

As we return to Proverbs 1,  I remind you that Wisdom is the theme of the book. Our devotional thought for today is from Proverbs 1:5-6.

Proverbs 1:5 – “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain [accept] unto wise counsels [accept guidance]:”

A wise man is a lifelong learner…he never stops listening or receiving instruction!  Is it not interesting that, you cannot tell a fool anything, but a wise man is ever learning?  People who pursue wisdom are wise enough to know what they don’t know!  They hear and heed wise counsel.240px-Rough_diamond

Proverbs 1:6 – “To understand a proverb [a wise saying], and the interpretation [meaning]; the words of the wise, and their dark [fearful] sayings.”

Proverbs are spiritual diamonds—to appreciate them you have to mine them from God’s Word.  A natural, uncut diamond has little beauty; however, after the jeweler has studied a diamond and determined how to bring out its beauty, he takes up his hammer and chisel carefully cutting away its flaws to reveal its hidden beauty.

diamondThat is the way it is when you read a chapter in Proverbs. On first reading one can easily miss the principles and deeper truths contained in them.  A little labor, study and meditation and the light of truth flows into your heart and mind.

Proverbs 25:2“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.”
