ADULTERYWe return to Proverbs 5 and find today’s proverbs in the midst of a series of proverbs addressing the moral hazard of sexual sins. Desiring to keep our study in context, I will quote the verses prior to Proverbs 5:7-8.

Proverbs 5:1-6 My son, attend [hearken; heed] unto my wisdom [wisdom that comes by way of experience], and bow thine ear to my understanding [insight; discernment—between good and evil]2 That thou mayest regard [keep; preserve] discretion[recognize evil], and that thy lips [language; speech] may keep [keep watch; preserve] knowledge. 3 For the lips [language; speech; i.e. conversation] of a strange woman [adulterous] drop as an honeycomb [sweet as honey], and her mouth is smoother than oil [full of flattery]4 But her end [the end of the adulterous woman] is bitter as wormwood [poisonous; cursed], sharp as a twoedged sword. broken heart5 Her feet [journey; path] go down to death; her steps take hold on hell [the path to hell]6 Lest thou shouldest ponder [weigh; consider] the path of life, her ways [adulterous woman] are moveable [uncertain; wander], that thou canst not know [understand; discern] them.”

In Proverbs 5:7-8, Solomon heralds a passionate call for his children to hear and heed his admonitions regarding sexual immorality.

Proverbs 5:7-8Hear [listen and obey] me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not[do not turn aside] from the words of my mouth. 8 Remove [put far away] thy way far from her[adulterous woman], and come not nigh the door of her house[avoid the place of temptation; avoid her path]:

Solomon knew well the tragic path of destruction adultery introduces to a household. He was the second born son of Bathsheba, her firstborn son having died in infancy as a result of God’s judgment against King David for his adultery with Bathsheba when she was the wife of Uriah, the Hittite (2 Samuel 12:9-25). Nathan prophesied against David that the consequences of his adultery with Bathsheba would follow him to his grave (2 Samuel 12:10).

The tragic consequences of sexual immorality are visible everywhere in our day. Pornography (Matthew 5:28), fornication [intimacy outside the bonds of marriage], adultery, incest and polygamy have turned America into a cesspool of immorality.

Days-of-NoahJesus warned His followers that the end of time would parallel the time of Noah…surely that time is upon us.

Matthew 24:37-39“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

Even so Lord, come quickly!
