Life worth LivingOur study of Proverbs 3 is in the midst of a series of verses that itemize the characteristics of a spiritually minded man (Proverbs 3:11-26).  We noted in an earlier devotion that a wise man accepts the chastening of the Lord (3:11-12).  His life is blessed because he pursues and knows the incomparable value of godly wisdom (3:13-15). Wisdom and godly discernment impart to man something money cannot buy, but for which men have hawked their souls pursuing—“A Life Worth Living!”

Wisdom is depicted in the following verses as a Queen ready and willing to reward all who seek her favor.

Proverbs 3:16-18 Length [long] of days is in her [wisdom’s] right hand [stronger, more important hand]; and in her left hand [considered the weaker, less rewarding] riches [material blessings] and honour [glory; reputation]. 17  Her [Wisdom’s] ways Queen Wisdom[journey; path] are ways of pleasantness [delight; sweet and pleasant to the soul], and all her paths are peace [well-being; prosperity]. 18  She is a tree of life [i.e. fruit-bearing tree] to them that lay hold [fasten upon; be strong] upon her: and happy [blessed; satisfied] is every one that retaineth her [follow close upon; lay hold of].”

Solomon appealed to his son to follow godly wisdom and aspire to the incomparable rewards she gives those who choose to walk in her ways: Long life, contentment, honor (3:16), joy, peace (3:17), lasting fruit (3:18) and satisfaction (3:18).

I invite you, before you rush into another day’s agenda, to take a moment and do a soul check. Is your soul content? Is your heart at peace?

Romans 5:1, 8-9 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

Peace with God begins with trusting Jesus Christ as your Savior.  Peace flourishes when a man chooses the Lord and delights in His Word (Psalm 1:1-3).

Psalm 1.3Psalm 1:1-3 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2  But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”
