In an earlier devotion I stated the obvious concerning Proverbs 8…it is a beautiful poetic portrait of Godly wisdom described in lofty and soaring terms too beautiful for this poor author to grasp, let along expound upon on paper. I invite you to take time and review Proverbs 8; read its words and ponder the majestic beauty with which Wisdom is described.
For the sake of brevity and context, I will repeat my amplified thoughts in Proverbs 8:22-26 before addressing today’s devotional passage, Proverbs 8:27-31.
Proverbs 8:22-26 – “The LORD [Jehovah; Yahweh; Eternal, Self-existent God] possessed [birthed; begotten; created] me [Wisdom] in the beginning [first] of His way, before His works of old. 23 I [Wisdom] was set up [ordained; anointed] from everlasting [eternal; perpetual; without end], from the beginning, or ever [ancient time; antiquity] the earth was [i.e. before the earth was created]. 24 When there were no depths [deep places in the sea], I was brought forth; when there were no fountains [springs] abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains were settled [lit. sink down; note – we know there are mountain ranges in the ocean], before the hills was I [Wisdom] brought forth [formed]: 26 While as yet He had not made [created; wrought] the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust [clay; ground] of the world.”
Wisdom is an attribute of the all-wise, all-knowing God-Creator and exists eternally with Him. Though often characterized as a maiden in Proverbs (feminine in form), Wisdom was ultimately personified in Jesus Christ. In other words “Wisdom”, was embodied in the person of Christ, the Living, Eternal Word of God, the Word made flesh (John 1:15). Understanding that Wisdom in Proverbs 8 speaks of Christ, read Proverbs 8:27-31 and identify Christ as Wisdom personified.
Proverbs 8:27-31 – When He [the LORD – Jehovah; Yahweh; Eternal, Self-existent God] prepared [established; fashioned] the heavens, I [Wisdom- Christ] was there: when He set a compass [circle; i.e. globe] upon the face of the depth: 28 When He established the clouds above: when He strengthened the fountains [surface] of the deep [deep waters]: 29 When He gave to the sea His decree [law; set boundaries of the sea], that the waters should not pass His commandment: when He appointed the foundations of the earth: 30 Then I [Wisdom-Christ] was by [with; beside] Him, as one brought up [Architect] with Him: and I [Wisdom] was daily His delight [joy], rejoicing always before Him; 31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of His earth; and my [Wisdom-Christ] delights [joy; pleasure] were with the sons of men.”
Christ is everything Wisdom is said to be in the preceding verses. He is co-eternal with God the Father. He was present when the sun, moon and stars were set in the heavens. He was present when the earth was formed as a globe (8:27). When the clouds were set in the sky and the waters stored in the depths of the earth—Christ was there (8:28). When God set the boundaries of the ocean and hung the earth in space—Christ was there (8:29). Christ is co-eternal and co-equal with God the Father. Christ is the Architect and Creator of the earth and man (8:30-31; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Ephesians 3:9).
Hebrews 11:3 – “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”
