proud as a peacockProverbs 29:23 – “A man’s pride [arrogance; haughty] shall bring him low [humble; abase; humiliate]: but honour [glory; splendor; wealth] shall uphold [sustain; support; keep fast] the humble [lowly; contrite] in spirit.”

The explosion of social media in the 21st century has been, at least in my opinion, unparalleled in providing a platform for common men and women to become the narcissistic, self-promoters we are by virtue of our sinful nature. Self-centeredness has been the curse of man since Adam and Eve swallowed Satan’s lie that eating forbidden fruit would avail them the opportunity to “be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5).

The plague of pride has been the haunt of sinners since the fall and its destructive path has brought low the most powerful men in history. Social media [Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Blogs] give ample evidence of our bent to eschew humility and servitude in favor of fame and shameless promotion. [If you don’t believe me, read your Facebook posts and those of your friends].

humility before honorConsider the promise in the second half of Proverbs 29:23 – honour shall uphold the humble in spirit”.   Honor, not the temporal glory the world lavishes upon slaves to fame, but the honor bestowed on God’s servants as an act of His grace. The honor God promises the humble sustains their love for eternity when the applause is silent and people ask, “Is he still around? I thought he was dead!”

Matthew 5:3, 5 – Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…5  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”

Forgotten by man, but beloved by God!
