Dallas shooting

  • I periodically share with my “Heart of a Shepherd” readers the bulletin letter I write weekly to the members and friends of Hillsdale Baptist Church.  Today’s blog post is from this Sunday’s letter.

“This know [be absolutely sure] also, that in the last days perilous [dangerous; violent] times shall come.” (2 Timothy 3:1)

I asked the staff to once again lower Hillsdale’s flag this Friday morning in memorial to the Dallas law enforcement members whose lives were taken in a senseless act of violence against us all.  It is with a heavy heart that I view the images of the carnage of civil and social unrest in America.  Already the news and Internet are abuzz with speculations trying to make sense out of the senseless.silent Christians

Liberals and their allies in the media will resurrect their attack on our 2nd Amendment “Right-to-Bear Arms”; “race baiters” will use the occasion to enflame passions; and the majority of Christians will remain silent, unwilling to engage a culture that is rapidly decaying.

As we gather to worship, a cultural debate is raging over whom and what to blame for the violence that has scarred our beloved nation. Liberals blame poverty, prejudice, and guns.  Social conservatives blame liberal bias, unemployment, and social agitators who make a fortune fueling racial strife and civil unrest.  Once again, the majority of Christians will remain silent, unwilling to state the obvious…the problem is sin and man’s depraved nature.

Dallas weepingThe United States, founded upon spiritual principles inherently Biblical, has systematically rejected the LORD, His Law and His Word.  We continue to elect men and women who have no moral absolutes and are brazen in their contempt for righteousness and holiness.  While our nation reflects a dereliction of moral stewardship, it has come to pass what the author of Proverbs warned, When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn” (Proverbs 29:2)…and yet, the majority of Christians are silent.

With a shepherd’s heart,

Pastor Travis D. Smith
