Christmas Eve, Sunday morning’s message examines Christ’s birth from the perspective of the Wise Men and considers the historical setting and the question: How did the Magi know to look for a star as the sign of the coming of a newborn King?

The world was veiled in spiritual darkness when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Herod, identified as “the Great,” had reigned in Judaea for 34 years when Jesus was born. Imagine how Herod felt when he heard there were Magi [wise men] from Persia inquiring, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:2) The birth announcement of a legitimate heir to David’s throne was a serious matter for Herod and his cronies. (Matthew 2:4-6)
